Social Rugby at its best

I had the honour of officiating a bizare a match between Vale of Lune 4ths and Preston Grasshoppers 4ths. With call ups for the 3rd team at Vale and a similar story for the Preston side, both teams were massively depleted. The Hoppers travelled with only 6 confirmed players, this also included one late cry off, which an injured manager had to start the match to ensure of the minimum numbers to start a match.

Vale ensured they had the 12 players to make sure the match could be started with the minimum 9 v 9. In what can only be describes as atrocious conditions the match started with an inch perfect kick to give Vale the only lineout of the match. Vale soon took control of the match and was running in tries like it was the Cape Town 7s. Vale soon took control and took it between themselves that to make it a bit more fun to mix the sides up. I think at full time everyone of the Vale players had worn the Hoppers shirt at one time or another during the match.

Despite the scoreline of 85-15 to Vale, the real winner was rugby, especially social rugby.  Everyone had enjoyed themselves and I am sure the 18 players will always remember this match as a memorable match. with some of the Hoppers players said that was the most fun they have had on rugby field in a lifetime of playing this great sport. All of this can be best seen in the photo attached taken at the end of the match. That isn't a squad it was all of the players involved.
